THE MANNISH BOYS:
Nominated for “Band of the Year” in the upcoming 2008 Blues Music Awards, the Mannish Boys are a modern day super group. Their debut release “That Represent Man” was critically praised and also received two nominations for “Album of the Year” and “Traditional Album of the Year.” Featuring a veritable one-band blues festival of talent; each member has been widely recognized in the blues field as a master of his craft and an in-demand artist in his own right. The current edition of the band includes Finis Tasby (urban singing legend), Bobby Jones (Chicago vocal sensation), Kid Ramos (headcuttin’ guitar pyrotechnics), Frank Goldwasser (greasy ghetto fretburner), and special guest guitarist Kirk “Eli” Fletcher (future of the blues). The remainder of the band is rounded out by Randy Chortkoff on harp, Ronnie James Weber or Tom Leavey on bass, and Richard “Big Foot” Innes on drums. Both Kid Ramos (guitar) and Richard Innes (drums) have been nominated as instrumentalists for the year in the upcoming 2008 Blues Music Awards. |
BOBBY JONES:

Delta Groove is proud to announce the latest addition to its talent roster, veteran singer Bobby Jones. Jones has a deep history on the Chicago blues scene, going back to the late 1950s when he was the featured vocalist with the legendary Aces band of Dave and Louis Myers (as seen in the photo taken at a gig with The Aces on Chicago’s south side c. 1960) and Fred Below; he also worked with famed guitarist (and featured Delta Groove artist) Jody Williams in the early ‘60s, the legendary Syl Johnson, and many others. Jones has moonlighted on the southern soul circuit in recent times as “Bobby Jonz”, but his roots and his true love are in the deep blues sounds from the heyday of the Chicago blues era. Jones recently returned to those roots and recorded as a featured vocalist on the Mannish Boys “Big Plans” CD on Delta Groove, and proved beyond any doubts that he’s still one of the most powerful and vibrant blues singers active today. |
KIRK FLETCHER:
Guitarist Kirk "Eli" Fletcher is, ironically, a rare presence on today's blues scene: a young African-American man who has thoroughly immersed himself in the classic blues sounds of the 1950s and '60s. Son of a Baptist minister, Kirk's introduction to the blues came as a teenager, through his older brother's copy of B.B. King's "Live At the Regal", and he hasn't looked back since. In his early twenties, Kirk found the guidance of Al Blake, who turned him on to dozens of obscure blues recordings, and also introduced him to West Coast guitar wizard Junior Watson. Kirk soon found himself performing around town with the likes of Janiva Magness and Lynwood Slim, eventually landing a spot in Kim Wilson’s Blues Revue. He later was recruited for veteran harp man Charlie Musslewhite’s band, and in 1999 released his debut “I’m Here & I’m Gone” on England’s JSP label featuring the support of notable guests Jackie Payne, John Marx and Alex Schultz. Since signing on to Delta Groove, Kirk has divided his time between touring and recording with both the Hollywood Blue Flames and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and now has turned his efforts back towards his own career. In a relatively short time playing music, Kirk has made some big waves and impressed a lot of the right people. |
PHILLIP WALKER:
Currently nominated for “Traditional Male Blues Artist of the Year” in the 2008 Blues Music Awards, Phillip Walker has the pedigree of a living blues legend. Born in 1937 near Lake Charles, LA, Walker, a second cousin to “Gatemouth Brown,” began making a name for himself in the early ‘50s backing Roscoe Gordon on recording sessions and touring with Zydeco king Clifton Chenier. Over the years Walker has released numerous highly acclaimed recordings for such notable record labels as Black Top, Alligator, JSP and Hightone Records. His most recent effort “Going Back Home” found this legendary Gulf Coast guitarist returning to his roots and exploring the rich history of Louisiana, Texas and the West Coast on his best album to date! |
JACKIE PAYNE & STEVE EDMONSON:
The addition of this duo featuring Jackie Payne and Steve Edmonson will add an unbeatable combination of soul power to any lineup! Jackie Payne is currently nominated in the 2008 BMA’s for the 2nd year in a row for “Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year” and recalls the vocal intensity of James Brown, Wilson Pickett and Bobby “Blue” Bland. His partner, guitarist Steve Edmonson, has shared stages with blues icons James Cotton and Luther Tucker, as well as Van Morrison and contributes his slashing West Side Chicago meets Texas style guitar inspired by Luther Tucker, Magic Sam and Freddy King. Together they were both nominated for “Soul Album of the Year” on last year’s Delta Groove release “Master of the Game,” in the 2007 Blues Music Awards. |
