JASON RICCI & NEW BLOOD "ROCKET NUMBER 9"
Street Date: 10/23/07

Retail: $17.99 / New Discounted Price: $12.99

Jason Ricci is that rare individual that only comes along once in a generation – an artist with the unique ability to help shape and redefine the sound of his chosen instrument and forever change the course of music history. His style is varied and his influences far reaching, having spent countless hours absorbing everything from Sun Ra to Little Walter, the Rolling Stones to the Pixies, Lou Reed to Govt. Mule, and everything in between. The depth of his music crisscrosses the audible landscape leaving no stone unturned as he fully explores blues, jazz, funk, rock, punk, and even drawing inspiration from the current crop of jam bands, all while still retaining the stamp of his own inimitable style.

Jason has over 10 years experience living life out on the road, and performs over 300 dates a year. New Blood’s live shows have quickly attained legendary cult status with archived performances surpassing downloads on the Internet by popular acts such as the Grateful Dead and Phish. In 2005, the Mercury News even listed the band in their Top Ten Shows of the Year alongside major touring artists including Prince, Rush and Green Day.

Through hard work and dedication Jason Ricci & New Blood have built a solid fan base from the ground up, selling over 12,000 copies of their self produced/released CD Blood on the Road,” and all without the help of record labels, national distributors, or publicists. Together with guitarist Shawn Starsky, who brings with him an arsenal of creative talent and fresh ideas, and Grammy Award winning producer John Porter at the helm, Jason Ricci & New Blood have created a visionary and sonically explosive masterpiece that is sure to shake your foundations.

“As a lover of live music, a JRNB show is absolutely exhilarating.
Imagine the best virtuoso-filled "jam band" you've ever seen
(think early '90's Phish, old Fleck tones, Allmans, Robert Randolph,
Derek Trucks, etc.) and then double the energy and stage presence.”

- Blake Taylor (Writer for Cincinnati City Beat)

"Ricci links the jazz mastery of Howard Levy, with the blues precision of Jerry Portnoy and hits speeds that make John Popper look like he's standing still."
- Brad Kava (Mercury News)

PHANTOM BLUES BAND "FOOTPRINTS" (NOV. 20)
Last year the Phantom Blues Band stepped Out of the Shadows from behind their longtime employer and musical leader Taj Mahal to deliver their Delta Groove debut which Goldmine Magazine described as "...a horn swaddled, contemporary blues gumbo for your booty." Although individual members have remained in high demand (Mike Finnigan was recruited for Joe Cocker's recent tour, Denny Freeman is now employed by Bob Dylan, and Johnny Lee Schell, Joe Sublett, Darrell Leonard and Tony Braunagel have been playing dates with the Blues Brothers), the band still found time to come together in the studio and record all new material resulting in a savory and zesty blend of Gospel, R&B, Soul, Funk, Reggae, Jazz and Blues. With a proven track record that includes two Grammy Awards for their previous work withTaj Mahal, you can expect the Phantom Blues Band to continue to follow in the “Footprints of sleeping giants and leave their own impressions behind for the world to discover.

Go behind the scenes with staff writer Scott Dirks as he shares inside stories and additional details on the cutting room floor regarding Delta Groove artists and releases. This month's article focuses on a recent conversation between staff writer Scott Dirks and vocalist/guitarist Vyasa Dodson of The Insomniacs.

EXCERPTS FROM THE ARTICLE: The Insomniacs have been shaking things up around their hometown of Portland, Oregon for a couple of years now, and their new Delta Groove release Left Coast Blues should go a long way towards propelling them into a much larger spotlight. I recently spoke with 26 year old Insomniacs guitarist and frontman Vyasa Dodson

JUNIOR WATSON (OCTOBER 15)
Guitarist Extraordinaire

Often referred to as the “King of West Coast Guitar,” Mike “Junior” Watson got his start in Northern California back in the early ‘70s as a member of the Gary Smith Blues Band. During that time he had the opportunity to back up such legendary artists in the Bay area as Good Rockin’ Robinson, Lowell Fulson, Sonny Rhodes, and one of his biggest influences and mentors Luther Tucker. Upon relocating to Southern California, he teamed up with Rod Piazza for the short lived Chicago Flying Saucers Band, and was a founding member of the original Mighty Flyers. Throughout the ‘90s he performed with legendary ‘60s boogie kings Canned Heat, and also teamed up with LA-based vocalist/harmonica player Lynwood Slim for a series of well received recordings including the classic “Lost in America.” In 1994, Black Top Records issued the aptly titled debut CD Long Overduewhich was previously only available as an import from Europe, helping to further establish Junior as one of the most influential guitarists of his generation. Over the years Watson has built up an impressive body of work, contributing to recordings too numerous to mention, that have inspired a whole legion of guitarists to seek out such obscure Jazz and Blues artists like Tiny Grimes, Billy Butler, Teddy Bunn, Oscar Moore and Bill Jennings, in order to emulate his spontaneous, off-the-wall style approach to the guitar.
