DELTA GROOVE MUSIC & FESTIVALS EXCLUSIVE STORM EUROPE AND SCANDINAVIA!!!

Fresh off the road with select musicians from the Festivals Exclusive roster, Delta Groove Music has left those East of the Atlantic thoroughly satisfied!  In conjunction with Festivals Exclusive, Delta Groove Music had the pleasure of lending the musical talents of the Jackie Payne Steve Edmonson Band and Bobby Jones featuring Kid Ramos to two major summer blues music festivals!

Thanks to the hard work of everyone at Festivals Exclusive, Blue Mountain and Intrepid Artists, the lineup at the Cognac Blues Festival was wrought full of the extreme talent of the Delta and Eclecto Groove labels.  Rick Booth and the guys at Intrepid secured Cedric & Malcolm a prime slot on the lineup to conclude their jaunt through Italy before heading stateside for the Poconos Blues FestivalHugh Southard and his staff at Blue Mountain delighted the locals of Cognac by booking The Soul of John Black on the Eden Blues stage in the park for four afternoons in a row.  This gave those who weren’t planning on catching the shows later in the evening a chance to catch some tasty free blues music in the park while enjoying a lazy afternoon in the sun!

What could possibly be better than tasty free blues music?  Well, for those lucky enough to score a ticket and grab a prime seat Saturday night at the main stage, they found the answer to that question.  After playing an intimate, acoustic gig in the Otard Castle the day before, the Jackie Payne Steve Edmonson Band were back in full swing, or should we say full funk?  Armed with their Sweet Meet Horn section, with Geechi Taylor on trumpit, Carl Green on sax, the steady core of the band, featuring Nick Otis (son of legendary Johnny Otis) on drums, Bill Singletary on bass, Steve Edmonson on guitar and newest member, Jeffrey Mehl on keys, the band lead singer, Jackie Payne took the entire audience on a wild ride of blues, soul, funk, and much, much more!  The entire town of Cognac put down their glasses and got real funky with the band!!  While Cognac may have been delighting their palates for generations, the bands from the Delta and Eclecto Groove labels left their musical palates insatiable and yet equally satisfied.  Our sincere thanks goes out to Denis LeBon at Tempo Spectacular and the entire Cognac Blues Passions staff of employees and volunteers for making this festival yet another memorable experience we were all lucky enough to be a part of!  We hope to see you all again very soon!

Now if you’re up for the journey, follow us on up to Notodden, Norway for yet another weekend of blues music jammed packed full of Delta and Eclecto Groove artists. While the others were scorching the stage in Cognac, France, Bobby Jones and Kid Ramos joined up with JT Lauritsen and his band, The Buckshots, in Drobak, Norway for the Drobak Blues Festival.  The following weekend, everybody got together and tore down the house at the Notodden Blues Festival.  After playing various gigs throughout the town on different stages and at different times, the Delta and Eclecto Groove family got together and gave the audience a real treat!  A one stop shop, reminiscent of what the Delta Groove All-Star Blues Review has in store for blues fans every year!  Albeit on a much smaller scale, the venue was packed full of music fanatics who knew exactly what they had in store for them with a lineup consisting of Bobby Jones featuring Kid Ramos (with help from Randy Chortkoff and JT Lauritsen and The Buckshots), Cedric Brunside and Lightin’ Malcolm, and The Soul of John Black; and they weren’t going to miss it for the world!!  Kudos go out to Jostein Forsberg and Ed Murphy from the Notodden Blues Festival for putting together a venue where our artists are able to come together and play music with each other, showing all facets of where the blues has been, where it is now and where it’s going!  Year after year, everyone involved with the Notodden Blues Festival, puts forth 150% and makes it one of the greatest weekends of the blues calendar!  Thank you for all of your efforts and for supporting our artists as you have in the past.  And for all of you music fans out there, keep your eyes and ears open for future stages of similar caliber, featuring arsenals of Delta and Eclecto Groove artists, throughout Europe and The United States!  You never know which festival we’ll show up at next!!  As for all the festival bookers, we’re ready and willing…  Dare you try us on for size?

ARTHUR ADAMS “STOMP THE FLOOR (NOVEMBER17th, 2009)

Arthur Adams has been a popular mainstay of the blues scene here in Los Angeles for many years. As the featured house bandleader at B.B. King’s blues club in Universal City, Arthur exposed patrons night after night to his soulful blend of silky rhythm & blues combined with his searing guitar and buttery smooth vocal delivery. When Randy Chortkoff first established Delta Groove in 2004 and released The Mannish Boys very first effort That Represent Man,” Arthur was invited to appear on several live gigs with the band and later was featured as a special guest on Mitch Kashmar’s debut CD Nickels & Dimes.” So when Arthur recently approached the label about his latest project, naturally he was welcomed in with open arms. Stomp The Floor features Arthur’s signature brand of soulfully sweet rhythm & blues filled with melodic hooks, classy arrangements and impeccable songwriting.

HOLLYWOOD BLUE FLAMES “DEEP IN AMERICA (TBA)

Since arriving on Delta Groove the Hollywood Blue Flames have been hailed as the true torch bearers of traditional blues in the modern age. Their unyielding and steadfast dedication to the art form has set the benchmark standard by which all other musicians must strive towards in order to obtain mastery within the classic blues genre. “Deep In America” follows the formula of their previous two-disc set, “Road To Rio,” once again throwing open the vaults and treating fans to a virtual treasure trove of classic material from two different eras of the band. Disc one will include a collection of recordings by the Hollywood Blue Flames with guitarists Kirk Fletcher and Junior Watson drawn from various studio sessions over the years featuring unreleased material, alternate takes and some newly recorded songs. Disc two will contain more vintage live recordings of the original Hollywood Fats Band showcasing the amazing talent of Hollywood Fats and the evolution the band was undergoing before his untimely death.

THE MANNISH BOYS (TBA)

The Mannish Boys will return to the studio this fall to record the follow up to their critically acclaimed fourth release “Lowdown Feelin’.” The Boys have been busy tearing up festival stages around the world and living up to their status as an irrefutably dynamite, self-contained traveling blues festival offered up in one truly convenient and irresistible package. Blues Revue declares “No band makes the old new again better than the Mannish Boys,” and Living Blues eloquently states “The Mannish Boys seem to be in command of virtually every classic, neo-classic, obscure, and almost-unknown riff and lick in the postwar cannon, and they approach it all with unfettered enthusiasm and commitment.” Fans can expect to hear once again, a rarefied collection of unearthed blues gems and classics performed by the core trio of vocalists – Bobby Jones, Finis Tasby and Johnny Dyer, backed by a surprising and ever revolving unit of world class musicians that comprise the all-star revue known as The Mannish Boys. Be sure to catch The Mannish Boys this January as they set sail for the Caribbean on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Over the last 44 years of playing music Rod Piazza's virtuosity on the harmonica and respect for tradition has been celebrated by fans and critics alike. The Mighty Flyers have taken home the prestigious Blues Music Award for Band of the Year no less than four times, Rod himself was honored in 1998 for the Harmonica Instrumentalist of the Year, and in 2008, Honey Piazza took home her very first Blues Music Award for the Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year.

In 2005, Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers landed a new home with the Los Angeles based Delta Groove Music, a label that has provided the band with many “firsts” in their long running career. For The Chosen Who, their Delta Groove debut, was an ambitious project that featured a host of special guests (a first in the Piazza discography), which included Finis Tasby, Kid Ramos, James Gadson, Johnny Dyer, Randy Chortkoff and the late Phil Guy, in addition to a bonus DVD of behind the scenes footage shot during the recording sessions. Their follow up release ThrillVille saw the departure of longtime Flyers’ bassist Bill Stuve and the band rechristening themselves as a quartet (another first!), while turning out another satisfying program of swinging West Coast and lowdown Chicago blues.

Now Piazza prepares to unveil his latest creation; a masterpiece and melding of soul, talent and art. There are plenty of thrills to be found as The Mighty Flyers continue to soar to new heights. IT’S ALL HERE…from the aggressive George Smith instrumental Sunbird, to the deep blues recital of Tell Me About It Sam, to the Jimmy Forrest jazz influenced Hey, Mrs. Jones. Piazza delights as he breathes life into funky new originals and pays loving tribute to a pantheon of blues greats including Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, and Slim Harpo, as well as many more surprises along the way. The time has arrived for Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers Blues Quartet to unleash… the Soul Monster!

“Piazza is a superior diatonic and chromatic harmonica player with style - the elusive quality that combines confidence, presence, control, risk-taking and instinct.” – Down Beat Magazine

“Piazza adds West coast swing and sophistication to traditional Chicago electric roots and the results are right up there with the best of Paul Butterfield or Kim Wilson.” – Blues Matters

“Rod Piazza lights up a blue note 40 years in the making each time he draws and blows through the reeds. Some are sweet, others wail like a train a-comin’. And when he sings, Piazza’s full of tuneful authority.” – Blues Revue

Candye Kane may very well be the toughest girl alive. Having survived an extremely dysfunctional childhood and becoming an unwed mother at the tender age of seventeen certainly taught this girl to grow up fast. But while life may not have dealt her the best hand to start, her precarious upbringing and turbulent past has remarkably ingrained within her one invaluable skill – survival. Through all of the trials and tribulations that life has thrown her way Candye has become a master of self preservation; meeting each and every challenge head on, and ultimately drawing inspiration and personal inner strength from the experiences she has faced during times of adversity. Ultimately it was through these difficult life tests that prepared Candye for her greatest challenge that was yet to come.

On Friday, February 22, Candye was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer after checking into the emergency room at the Scripps Memorial Hospital with complaints of abdominal pain. In an instant her life had suddenly and unexpectedly altered course. Her European tour was cancelled and in exchange a surgical procedure was scheduled to make the attempt to remove the tumor. With no savings or health insurance to speak of, and haunted by the memories of past friends who had succumbed to this disease, Candye was faced with a most uncertain future. Fortunately, she would soon learn that she would not have to face this daunting challenge alone. Caring friends and fans from around the world rallied to her side and threw numerous benefits to help raise money for the mounting medical expenses. One year and two CT scans later, and Candye has thankfully been pronounced cancer free.

With renewed energy and a new lease on life, Candye emerged from the recording studio with her most personal and rewarding work to date. Backed by her regular touring band and produced by herself, along with her guitarist - the amazingly talented Laura Chavez; Candye once again finds herself surrounded and supported by a caring group of friends and individuals including special guests Dave Gonzalez (The Paladins, Hacienda Brothers) and Stephen Hodges (Mavis Staples, Tom Waits), along with new label mates Kid Ramos (The Mannish Boys, Los Fabulocos) and Mitch Kashmar. Having overcome her heroic battle with cancer Candye now proudly makes her triumphant return! Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No it’s “Superhero,” Candye’s ninth release and official debut for Delta Groove Music.

“Kane proves she can liven up any party.” – People Magazine

“Kane's powerful voice can batter like a storm and purr like a sex kitten. Spend an hour with her and you'll feel as though you could tell her all your troubles.” – Blues Revue

“Kane is a blazing, sunny force of nature, a paragon of female power.” – Blues Wax

“Good lord! Check out the voice on this lady! It's like Janis Joplin if she had the strength of a driving hurricane behind her.” – In Music We Trust

NICK CURRAN

Nick Curran joins us by way of Austin, Texas, and lays down a strikingly savage blend of ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll, rhythm & blues, rockabilly and of course, slashing Texas blues. His solo debut, “Fixin’ Your Head,” released in 2000 was an atomic blast of nostalgic R&B delivered with a fresh, youthful exuberance and inspired by such early pioneers as Guitar Slim, T-Bone Walker, Little Richard, Johnny “Guitar” Watson and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown. After four stunning solo releases Nick disbanded the Nitelifes and took flight with The Fabulous Thunderbirds appearing on the band’s 2005 release “Painted On,” alongside a stellar lineup that also included Kirk Fletcher on guitar, Gene Taylor on piano, Ronnie James Weber on bass and Jimi Bott on drums. But alas, all good things must come to an end, and Nick soon turned his attention in a surprisingly new direction. His band, Deguello, soon found Nick pursuing his passion and affinity for punk rock music while also allowing a whole new audience to discover his boundless energy and ferocious raw talent. But for fans of his earlier blues influenced recordings, it would seem that all was now lost. Fast forward to 2009 and where is Nick now? Well…he’s back!! And sounding better than ever!!! His new band, The Lowlifes, recall his earlier rhythm & blues inspired work for the Texas Jamboree label and Nick is promising fans that the best is yet to come. Look out for Nick Curran & the Lowlifes brand new release in early 2010 on Delta Groove Music.

ARTHUR ADAMS

Based right here in our own backyard in the City of Angels comes the sweet, soulful sounds of Arthur Adams. The Tennessee native got his start early in life at six years old singing in church and later acquired his first guitar as he entered into his teens upon which he began to learn how to play. Arthur’s initial inspiration came from guitarist Howard Carroll of the Dixie Hummingbirds, but he also displays an obvious stylistic affection and debt to the six string attack of longtime friend B.B. King. Arthur traveled throughout the south early on in his career eventually heading west and settling in Los Angeles, California in the late sixties where he has since remained. His first album, “It’s Private Tonight,” was released on Blue Thumb Records in 1972, firmly establishing the silky smooth vocal presence and guitar style that still comprises Arthur’s signature sound of today. Over the years Arthur has contributed his talents to numerous recording projects including albums by Jimmy Smith, Nina Simone, Quincy Jones, Lowell Fulson, The Crusaders and Bonnie Raitt. In 1991, Arthur played rhythm guitar and contributed two songs - “Mean And Evil” and “Something Up My Sleeve,” to B.B. King’s album “There Is Always One More Time” on MCA Records. King later returned the favor appearing on Arthur’s release “Back On Track” in 1999. Ten years later Arthur Adams is still going strong. His brand new release “Stomp The Floor” is set for release this coming November on Delta Groove Music.

REVIEWS - WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING:

Rod Piazza

“Harmonica wise, Rod has never sounded better with his fat, West Coast horn sound and concise and poignant solos.” – Juke Joint Soul

“Rod and Honey, with Henry Carvajal and Dave Kida on guitar and drums, respectively, produce a fine, spontaneous meld of the best traditions of West Coast swing and Chicago 'grind'” – Blues & Rhythm magazine

“Piazza blows typically powerhouse harmonica, and his vocals are quite commanding…” – Living Blues magazine

Candye Kane

“Superhero is an album that stimulates the fun hormones, and that alone makes it ripe for any decade.” – Ultimate Guitar

“Deeply influenced by the style of the recently departed Koko Taylor, Kane has access to a reserve of pure lungpower that can provide punctuation to a song that lesser singers just don't have.” – North County Times

But the guitar star of the show is co-producer Laura Chavez…she combines a killer instinct with mature-beyond-her-years taste…She's not a rising star - she's already arrived.” - Vintage Guitar

3rd Annual Delta Groove All-Star Blues Revue: Live At Ground Zero, Vols. 1 & 2

“…these two sets showcase the sheer quality that Randy Chortkoff has attracted to this now prestigious label. When I say sheer quality- I do not use the words lightly, as these are all artists who are as compellingly talented in a live setting as they are on disc…” – Blues In Britain

“…the variety and strength of the label’s performers are simply astonishing…For that friend of yours who thinks ‘all blues sounds the same,’ these are the recordings that will prove them wrong.” – Blues Revue

The Insomniacs

“Why is it that so many modern-day recordings just don’t sound as “delicious” as these guys get it, with their use of vintage instruments and recording techniques.  These lads have got it right!” – Blues & Rhythm Magazine

“Do these boys have what it takes to make genuine blues? With the high stepping “Broke and Lonely” and Little Richard’s “Directly From My Heart To You” among this sophomore release’s many strong points, the answer is firmly affirmative.” – Vintage Guitar

“Listening to the Insomniacs’ new release is like swiping the keys to your Dad’s prized ’66 Chevy, stuffing the trunk full of beer and Doritos, grabbing your friends, and racing down the road for a blues tour that covers truck stops and roadhouses in 24 states in less than 24 hours.” – Blues Revue

Bobby Jones

“…few singers have such well-developed skills in interpreting lyrics, particularly when handed outstanding songs like those on Comin’ Back Hard.” – Living Blues

“This is required listening for Blues aficionados.” – BluesWax

“This magnificent comeback will serve as an eye-opening introduction to fans unaware of Jones’ obscure 45s. It’s rare that a blues performer makes a definitive album this late in his career, but that's precisely what Jones has done.” – Blues Revue

Mitch Kashmar

“Live at Labatt proves that Kashmar is ready to join the top ranks of fellow West Coast harpmen like Rod Piazza and Mark Hummel.” – Blues Revue

“Kashmar's new fans can buy with confidence - one of the best live albums I've heard in quite a while, every bit as good as his studio outings” – Blues & Rhythm Magazine
