The Serbian born guitarist has been a favorite on the festival circuit since her debut CD Comfort to the Soul in 2003. The always personable Popovic knows how to please a crowd and make them all feel as if they were her best friends. I saw her sit and sign autographs and pose for pictures for two hours after one of her shows. She is a powerful entertainer, but she doesn’t have the voice of a Shemekia Copeland or Janiva Magness nor can she play guitar like Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan as some critics have said. She has improved and knowing her passion for music, she will continue to improve.
The opening track, U Complete Me has a driving beat and a hook that will keep the listener rocking alone with the wah-wah pedal in overdrive. Between Our Worlds ventures into the reggae world as Ana’s lyrics speak of building bridges between our worlds. Probably the weakest track on the CD is Doubt Everybody But Me. Following a traditional jazz line, Popovic’s vocals are borderline screechy as she tries her best to fit into the lounge singer mold.
Where Ana proves her talent is in her lyrics and arranging. Backed by a host of top drawer musicians she is firmly in control and knows what her music is saying and how she wants to say it. While she’ll continue to be compared to other singer, songwriter, guitarist that are in music today, but make no mistake, Ana Popovic will leave her mark on music and it will be her mark alone.
