ARTHUR ADAMS "STOMP THE FLOOR"
Source: FB Folk Bulletin
Date: 02/2010

Writer: Tim Richards

Arthur Adams has developed an instantly recognizable style that has brought him a long ways from his roots in Mendon Tennessee. Picking up the guitar as a teen he soon found himself playing in a gospel group named the Gospel Travelers, but soon was disbanded when he moved to Memphis to attend college. As luck would have it, he was soon traveling with Nashville singer Gene Allison who left him high and dry in Dallas. Making the best of the situation, Adams soon found himself in house bands backing musicians such as Elmore James, Chuck Berry and Lightin’ Hopkins.

By 1967 Adams had established himself in Los Angles where he found a lucrative career as a studio musician where he played on sessions by The Jackson 5, Henry Mancini, Sonny Bono and Nancy Wilson to name a few. As for his own recording career, his 1969 release on the Chisa label, It’s Private Tonight helped establish him as an L.A. mainstay to this day.

On Stomp the Floor, Adams continues to produce remarkable R&B and blues tinged with his commanding vocals and distinctive guitar work. Al the songs on this release as with his last two releases are all originals which in itself is a testament to his songwriting abilities. The instrumental You Got That Right is just such a showcase for Arthur’s guitar prowess.  Backed by an A-list of musicians that includes Hense Powell on keyboards, Reggie McBride and Lou Castro on bass, James Gadson on drums, Stacy Lamont-Snyder and David Leich on percussion. Add the horn section of Lee Thornberg (trumpet), Dave Woodford (saxophone), and Garrett Adkins (trombone) and it all becomes the perfect backdrop for Arthur’s vocal dexterity.

Even though Arthur is getting up in years, his vocals are still clear and pristine and his songwriting ability has only sharpened through the years. This release is one that has earned a place on everybody’s play list.
