Candye Kane: Superhero

Candye Kane is a survivor. Her bio has always fascinated me for the courage that  she represents; the liner notes that she's added to this CD bring her good fortune up to date. Kane survived pancreatic cancer last year and has now been pronounced cancer-free. It means that we're gonna be enjoying her work as much as we enjoy this Delta Groove debut for a long time coming.

Ten originals, many co-written with her guitarist, plus several classic blues tunes give this program a first-class reputation. Kane sings with force and power, making her lyrics come alive with a sizzle and plenty of sass. She's lucid in her interpretations, explaining each message clearly with a personal touch. Willie Dixon's "You Need Love" never had
as much emphasis before, and guitarist Laura Chavez, double bassist Paul Loranger and drummer Evan Caleb give Kane sterling accompaniment.

She sings with Mitch Kashmar on one country-flavored gem that maintains a laid-back posture, while her "I'm gonna Be Just Fine," sung unaccompanied, delivers a healing message for eternity. The band members that work with her on this CD, both family and friends, include guitarists Kid Ramos and Laura Chavez, harmonica ace Mitch Kashmar,
saxophonist Jonny Viau, her eldest son, Evan, on drums, Paul Loranger on bass, and several others.
