Candye Kane, The Toughest Girl Alive
Blues singer and social activist Candye Kane has admittedly had a rough life, but she doesn't seem to let it get her down. Kane recently beat pancreatic cancer, just one more obstacle in a life filled with such, but she continues to give 110% on stage better than 200 nights a year, delivering the biggest, boldest, bluesiest live performances that you'll ever see.
Working with Javier Velasco, Director of the San Diego Ballet, Kane has recently written a theatrical stage show based on the singer's colorful life. Titled The Toughest Girl Alive, the biographical performance piece touches on gang violence, alternative sexuality, social welfare programs, discrimination, and other issues that have affected Kane's life, all expressed by the music, lyrics, and unique voice of Candye Kane.
The Toughest Girl Alive will be presented as part of the New York International Fringe Festival in August. In order to pay to transport her band and herself, as well as a cast and crew for the show, from San Diego to New York City, Kane has launched a Kickstarter campaign to pay for transportation, room and board, and other incidentals while in NYC. Kane asked for half of what they budgeted for the trip in order not to over-reach, and her fans have hit that goal and more. However, they could still use more money to meet expenses, so jump on over to Kane's Kickstarter page and give a little something to help Kane meet this dream.
Kane also has a new album titled Sister Vagabond coming out on August 16, 2011, released by Delta Groove Records. Working again with guitarist Laura Chavez, her collaborator on the Blues Music Award nominated 2010 album Superhero, Kane has put together an inspired collection of blues and soul songs that deal with "love, heartbreak, rejection and personal empowerment," all delivered in Kane's distinctive, undeniable vocal style. Including a powerful cover of Brenda Lee's "Sweet Nothings," Sister Vagabond will be released on both CD and as a limited edition vinyl version.
"I take things one day at a time and today I am feeling great and very optimistic about my new CD," Kane says in a press release for the new album. "It's been awesome to write and co-produce again with my guitarist Laura Chavez. I am grateful for every chance I get to make music live, or in the studio. Most people are given only three months to live after a pancreatic cancer diagnosis and three years later, I am still here. So any opportunity I have to create music makes me humbled and grateful."
