"Sister Vagabond"
CANDYE KANE, Sister Vagabond (Delta Groove): 3/5
Kane's Brenda Lee-meets-Ruth Brown brass enlivens a few covers, particularly the Lee chestnut "Sweet Nothin's" and the romping Jack Tempchin/Glenn Frey tune "Everybody's Gonna Love Somebody Tonight," sparked by James Harman's harmonica licks. (Other Southland blues heroes on hand include accordionist Eddie Baytos, percussionist Stephen Hodges and slide guitarist Nathan James.) She's at her best matching emotionally defiant lyrics with guitarist/co-producer Laura Chavez's reverbed fretwork on tracks like "Side Dish" and "You Can't Hurt Me Anymore." Jumping blues with swinging self-affirmation. Candyekane.com
