FRANK
GOLDWASSER "BLUJU"
Source: Washington Blues Society
Date: 04/2007
Writer: Malcolm Kennedy |
Frank was born in Paris, France in 1960 and after playing behind Sonny Rhodes accepted his invitation to move to the Bay Area arriving in 1981. Frank was hired by Troce Key, owner of Eli’s Mile High Club in Oakland where he worked in the house band and Key dubbed him “Paris Slim”. Frank worked at Eli’s and many other prominent local clubs backing the likes of Charlie Musselwhite, and Lowell Fulson, toured for three years with Jimmy McCacklin and in 1988 released his debut CD “Blues For Esther”, which received a Handy Award nomination. The follow up CD was “Bleedin’ Heart” co-produced by Joe Louis Walker who along with Sonny Rhodes performed on it. As well as backing many notable artists at shows Frank has done session work and frequent European tours. Moving to Southern Cal in 1998 Frank hooked up with Randy Chortoff and went into the studio in 2000 for this project which was recorded throughout 2001. Bluju was originally released in Europe on Germany’s Crosscut Records. Goldwasser brings many elements together in his music, rock, world beat, New Orleans funk Chicago, Delta and West Coast blues while never leaving the core of the blues behind and his guitar styling’s are many and varied. My favorite tunes are the instrumental “Melba’ Bump” (inspired by his cat) and the two bonus tracks added for this release recorded in 2004/2005 on which in this writers opinion Frank absolutely nails his original blues inspiration Hound Dog Taylor’s “She’s Gone” & “55th Street Boogie”. Most recently Goldwasser has recorded as a member of the Mannish Boys who received a 2006 BMA nomination for “Album of the Year” & “Traditional Blues Album of the Year” with their release “That Represent Man” and BMA nominated “Best Band” with “Live and in Demand” which was recorded at the 2005 Winthrop Rhythm & Blues Festival This outstanding CD deserves to be a part of your blues collection. |
