Blues bloods
Jason Ricci is considered one of the finest young harmonica players working the blues, rock and jam-band circuits. He's good enough to have played with late blues giants Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside, and that's enough resume for me. You may have also heard him with Big Al & The Heavyweights.
He and his band, New Blood, have just released "Rocket Number 9" and bring their acclaimed live show Tuesday to Stevie Ray's Blues Bar, 230 E. Main St. (7 p.m., $12).
Short takes
Phantom Family Halo is teaming with Brooklyn's La Otracina for a three-week tour of the West Coast that, naturally, starts tonight at Cahoots, 1047 Bardstown Road (11 p.m., $5). La Otracina is a trio that, like PFH, explores the extremities of modern music.
Jon Ashley and The Little Triggers will perform a free show tomorrow at ear X-tacy records, 1534 Bardstown Road, at 6 p.m. Ashley's new album is "Walk Free."
An art show tonight at The Rudyard Kipling, 422 W. Oak St., features a variety of mediums and approaches, plus music from Squeezebot. It's also free, with doors at 7 p.m. One artist, Damon Thompson, will start and finish a painting on-site during the show.
Jeffrey Lee Puckett's "Sound Effects" column runs Fridays in Extra. On Saturday in Scene he recommends great digital music.
