JOHN
LONG "LOST & FOUND"
Source: Blues Matters
Date: 04/2006
Writer: Dave Drury |
Happily
repeated playing has only confirmed this man's
credentials as a master in the old school bluesman's
style. All of the material is original and features
Long on vocals, guitar and harmonica with occasional
help from Fred Kaplan on piano. Hokum Town features
gritty vocals and excellent bottleneck guitar
work which wouldn't be out of place on a John
Hammond album. Hell Cat has some terrific rolling
piano and good interplay with the guitar. Long
has an intensity and honesty in his playing and
singing and an uncanny ability to create original
songs that sound as if they have come from a long-lost
cache of vintage recordings by one of the classic
bluesmen . Johnny's Jump is a jaunty little number
which swings along in fine style featuring Long's
excellent guitar picking and rack harp. Apparently
this man has only recently come back to the recording
and live scene and has a 40 year backlog of original
material to draw from - the results are certainly
stunning. The album closes with Leavin ' St. Louis
with Kaplan's barrelhouse piano and Long's bottleneck
guitar creating a rollicking old time feel which
is enough to put a smile, on anyone's face. This
is a cracking album which is a must buy for all
lovers of traditional acoustic blues. |
