KIRK FLETCHER "SHADES OF BLUE"
Source: Southland Blues Magazine
Date: 11/2004

Jim Santella

Guitarist Kirk "Eli" Fletcher is quite familiar to Southland fans and collectors. His name appears alongside 2000 Lbs. Of Blues, James Harman, Joe Houston, Johnny Dyer, Finis Tasby, and Kid Ramos, on their contemporary projects. His driving guitar gives every situation a healthy kick. For his project, it’s the electric blues of the 1950s and 1960s: the blues pioneered by Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon.

Kim Wilson guests on about half the program with soulful openness. He sings and adds harmonica splendor to the session – the kind of lyrical action that stays with you long after the CD player has stopped. Janiva Magness and Finis Tasby each add a handful of vocals to Fletcher’s session, too. They complement the band with the kind of blues that relates to our every day. You can feel what they say. It’s all about the way we live our lives.

Fletcher’s soulful guitar interludes bring each vocal number home. His instrumental features rock with soulful intensity. Finally available in the U.S., this release has been augmented with three bonus tracks: a lovely acoustic take of "Don’t Go No Further," an alternate take of his instrumental gem "Club Zanzibar with Wilson," and a rockin’ conversation with Magness on "You Don’t Know." Once again, vocalist and guitarist trade choruses with driving, blues authority. Recommended, Fletcher’s album is the real thing.
