Los Fabulocos and other live music groups entertain this weekend

Los Fabulocos, a hot new band out of East Los Angeles, has just released its debut CD and is coming to Texas this weekend to promote it. Friday night the band performs at Casbeers in San Antonio, Saturday night at the Continental Club in Austin and Sunday afternoon at Gruene Hall.

Guitarist Kid Ramos called from his home in Los Angeles to talk about the upcoming trip to the Lone Star state and how he became the guitarist in this exciting new band. “Jesse Cuevas, our singer and accordion player, plus drummer Mike Molina were in The Blazers together before starting Los Fabulocos about four years ago. Bassist James Barrios and guitarist Big Manny joined later. When Manny decided to leave the band, Jesse gave me a call. We’d been friends for a long time and often rode Harleys together. He asked if I knew any guitar players that might want to join his band. I was already playing in a blues band called Mannish Boys, so he was surprised when I said I’d like to give it a try. I had to learn to play the bajo sexto, a 12- string Mexican instrument. Fortunately Jesse had one I could borrow and taught me a few chords. All of us are from the Los Angeles area and have very similar backgrounds. We have been rehearsing and writing songs for our next album, so we’re really excited about where we’re going. Everyone in the band brings something different, style wise. I finally convinced the owner of a blues label in LA to let us record our CD in his studio. We basically just went in and cut it live; playing the songs we do in our shows. We can’t wait to get back to Texas, I love Gruene Hall. When I played guitar in the Fabulous Thunderbirds, we played there many times. After I left the T-Birds and moved back to California, I’ve really missed playing in Texas.”
The Gruene Hall show is free and starts at 4 p.m. The band’s music will remind you of traditional Tejano, Tex-Mex, blues and country, all rolled into one. Come out this Sunday and check the band out, I think you’ll like what you hear.

If you’re in the mood for live music, this is your weekend. Area venues are booked solid, offering a wide variety of artists to satisfy just about any type of music you want to hear. Matt Skinner will be at River Road Icehouse on Thursday night. Matt is one of the most talented singer-songwriters in Texas, so this will be the place to be on Thursday. Texas super group Heybale will play Riley’s Tavern on Friday night. Legendary piano player Earl Poole Ball and guitarist Redd Volkaert are the backbone of this group and have played with Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard respectively. New Jersey transplant Tom Gillam will bring his unique brand of rock and Americana to Tavern in the Gruene on Saturday night. The cover is just $3, and it will be money well spent. Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos has the fabulous Hayes Carll on Friday night and guitar wizard Monte Montgomery on Saturday night. Carll’s latest CD “Trouble in Mind” was one of the best albums of 2008 while Monte’s new self-titled CD is one of the best of his career. Roger Creager has built a huge fan base in Texas by playing over 200 shows a year and you can bet he’ll have a sold-out show at Floores Country Store on Friday night. Gary P. Nunn has written dozens of fantastic songs about our wonderful state and you can bet he’ll play them all at Floores Saturday night. So cash in those 401(K)s and get out there, the music is waiting.
