With its sophomore release, the aptly titled "Dos," the California-based roots quartet Los Fabulocos proves to be one of the top purveyors of rocking Cali-Mex music.
The group features Jesus Cuevas on vocals/accordion and Mike Molina on drums, formerly one-half of the noted Cali-Mex outfit The Blazers, along with bassist James Barrios and top blues/roots guitarist David "Kid" Ramos (Fabulous Thunderbirds, James Harman). As it did on its lauded 2008 debut, the band expertly combines rockabilly, blues, Bakersfield country and soul with Mexican ranchera and conjunto styles.
Their jumping, swinging sound is as hot as a habanero pepper as Cuevas' versatile and busy accordion combines with the Kid's stinging leads and rhythm work. Enlivened by Cuevas' soulful tenor voice, the band's sound recalls such classic groups as Los Lobos and the Texas Tornados. An album highlight is a Spanish version of Little Richard's "Keep a Knockin'."
So, is it blues, rock or Mexican? The band's music would be equally at home at a Cinco de Mayo festival or a down-and-dirty juke joint.
