The East L.A.-based Fabulocos recorded their debut album in two days, slapping together a Cal-Mex, Tex-Mex, swamp pop and blues record; an American roots album that was fun, fun and more fun.
For Dos, accordionist/singer Jesus "Jesse" Cuevas and drummer Mike "Mr. Fiesta" Molina (both former Blazers), country-influenced bassist James Barrios and noted blues guitarist/former Fab T-Bird Kid Ramos probably took a little longer.
The good news is the band didn't lose the fun or the ability to celebrate American music in all its basic glory.
Los Fabulocos have a ball shifting musical gears among rock 'n' roll (She Wakes Up Crying, Little Richard's Keep A Knockin'), conjunto (Una Pura y Dos Con Sal), blues (My Brother's Keeper) and oldies-style belly rubbers (I Never Thought).
Shifting naturally between English and Spanish, the quartet gives the songs the textures they need while giving appreciative listeners a melting pot they can dance to.
