Think of the blues as a buffet of styles and sounds. The all-you-can-eat Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue will deliver a variety of delicious blues dishes at the Key Palace Theatre in Redkey, Ind., Feb. 2 and the Slippery Noodle Inn Feb. 5. The revue lineup includes Tommy Castro, Deanna Bogart, Magic Dick and Ronnie Baker Brooks.

You can sample from a smorgasbord of instruments at the Revue: Castro delivers soulful crooning and rockin’ blues guitar; Bogart scores a musical hat trick of vocals, saxophone and keyboards; and harmonica man Magic Dick, who’s known for his solo work and his association with J. Geils Blues Band (later just J. Geils Band), offers up the sounds of his trusty harp. That’s not to mention what second-generation bluesman Ronnie Baker Brooks is cooking up.

Brooks said the idea of this tour came about while Castro and Brooks were performing on a blues cruise (a cruise ship full of blues bands).

“Tommy wanted to find the right people to make it work,” Brooks says. “He wanted a nice variety and I think we have it. We each do a thirty-minute set and then we will all play together. Everybody has their own style and different things will happen.”

A little more about Brooks: The son of Chicago blues staple Lonnie Brooks (and older brother of bluesman Wayne), Ronnie spent 13 years under his father’s wing before going solo and releasing three albums (Golddigger, Take Me Witcha and The Torch) on his own label, Watchdog. It’s been 10 years since he set out on his own.

“I’ve been enjoying it,” Brooks says. “The only setback is not being able to play with my father and Wayne. If we’re all in town together, yes [we can]. I’m really having a good time as a bandleader, playing my own material, just record what I feel.

The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue will be releasing a live album called Command Performance on Delta Groove in March. Brooks will also be co-headlining a concert with Eric Bibb at Loeb Playhouse at Purdue University Thursday, Jan. 31.
