We really enjoyed Lynwood Slim
with Kid Ramos when we saw him at the New Orleans
a few years ago, and here's his new disc on the
label that's fast becoming the most relevant Blues
label around. Of course that's coming from someone
who's particularly fond of the West Coast Blues
sound. Kid is here to help, as is Kirk Fletcher
from the Hollywood Blue Flames (Richard Innes
from the Flames also drums on a few cuts) and
guitarist Armando Cortez, plus Rich Del Grosso
on mandolin and the Blasters' John Bazz on bass.
Here's another jazzy, laid back release that shows
the Hollywood Blue Flames new CD is no fluke -
Delta Groove really means it - they don't feel
like we need any more beatings about the head
and shoulders with massive crunchy guitar solos!
How about tasty ones instead? Here they are! Here'
Slim's only written three of the tunes (one with
Ramos), but choice of repertoire is a very important
part of the game, and he's long been a master.
He's drawn from Clifton Chenier (“All Night
Long”), Pete Johnson (“Wee Baby Blues”),
Mickey Baker (“I'm Tired”), Duke Ellington
(“Nothin' But The Blues”) and others,
opening with the standard “Well Alright,
OK, You Win”. There are more obscure sources,
too, but what you need to know is that Lynwood
Slim is a master of both harmonica and vocals,
and he knows how to choose - or write - a song
to suit the mood. The Chicago style is not abandoned
- it's been a source of inspiration for the majority
of Blues masters of Slim's generation. Represented
by “Say It” (by Lowman Pauling of
the Five Royales) which also features The Chicago
Blues Angels, it is followed the vintage jazz
feel of “Me Myself And I”, with it's
gypsy jazz acoustic guitar feel (Jeff Ross and
Gonzalo Bergara. “I'm Sorry” (from
the pen of Harvey Fuqua and Bo Diddley, with Alan
Freed given credit too) is an absolutely wonderful
slow dance number! Another terrific release from
Delta Groove! Sirs,
I am in awe, and that is NOT a word I use much! |
