Sometimes when you add one great thing to another great thing the result is one awful thing. For example, if you add 100 dollar bills to fire you get burnt money which, of course, is useless. If you add diamonds to chocolate chip cookies you get to go to the dentist and you better pray the dentist doesn't mind those burnt hundred dollar bills you're trying to use to pay for some new teeth. But, when you add Lynwood Slim to the Igor Prado band something magical happens. The two sounds combine into one giant sound that is so amazingly good that there should be a law put in place to make sure they never separate. Lynwood Slim and the Igor Prado Band's new album, Brazilian Kicks, is pure genius. Taking Lynwood's mastery of the harp and Igor Prado's blend of jump blues and you get one of the finest albums to be released this year, last year, and any other year.

When I first put this album on I would have swore that Lynwood Slim somehow made a deal with the late Wilson Pickett for the soul in his voice. Sweet Mary Mother of God does that white guy got some soul! "Shake it Baby" is an awesome song that just gets you primed for things to come. From the horns that keep the background full of sound to Igor's excellent guitar playing to Lynwood's voice, the opening song is bananas. It sets you up for a great full album experience that you won't soon forget due largely to the fact that you won't be able to stop listening to this thing. "Is It True" is a classic traditional blues song with a great vibe about guys and girls. It gets followed by the up tempo stroke of genius called "Bloodshot Eyes" which is the blue print for jump blues. Frankenstein couldn't sit still listening to this even if he was still strapped down. "Blue Bop" is bulletproof. It is a speed of light instrumental featuring the fret board talents of Brazilian born Igor Prado himself. This guy is amazingly good. Add in the little piece of trivia that he learned to play the guitar upside down and strung reversed (thinnest string on top) because he was a lefty with a righty's tool makes him damn near God-like on the strings. "Maybe Someday" is a beautiful song. Hands down it's one of the best I've heard in a long while. Lynwood makes you feel his pain and loneliness with every word he sings. Music this good should be released more often. This stuff is necessary for living.

This album is from beginning to end an eargasm of great blues. There isn't a song on Brazilian Kicks that won't have you enjoying yourself. The marriage of Lynwood Slim to the Igor Prado Band has given you and me a bouncing blues album you won't soon forget.
