LYNWOOD
SLIM "LAST CALL"
Source: Suncoast Blues

Date: 10/2006
Writer: Marcella Ruso |
This
is a brand new release of a sweet selection of
songs from great legends like Billie Holiday (Me
Myself & I), Duke Ellington (Nothin’
but the Blues), Joe Turner (Wee Baby Blues), and
Bo Diddley (I’m Sorry), and there is more.
Slim’s band, featuring guitar players
Kid Ramos, Kirk Fletcher & Armando Cortez
and mandolin virtuoso Rich Delgrosso, is really
tight, whether they are playing cool jazz or
the blues. Just when you thought the band could
not get any tighter, you get the icing on the
cake when Slim plays his Hohner 64 Chromatic,
or flute, or harmonica. Where is this guy from?
On the down side, Slim wastes too much track
time doing vocals. I found myself wishing he
would just cut it out, give me what I want,
and blow that tune out on his harp.
Lynwood Slim "Last Call" is a first
class production, with razor-sharp interpretations
of the legend’s songs—some jazz,
some blues, and all worth listening to, vocals
and all.
