The
basic concept here is to mix classic Blues songs
with classics from what the Jazz and Sinatra
sets call “the great American songbook.”
I’m big fan of both, and I am happy to
report that the mix comes across quite well
here. Perhaps that’s because the songs
are well chosen to mesh well, like the Ellington
piece “Nothin’ But the Blues”
(#5) which could fit in either category. Perhaps
it’s because the arrangements bring the
two genres closer, as in the snappy version
of “Well Alright, O.K. You Win”
(#1), or the classy “Wee Baby Blues”
(#3). In any case, these and other standouts
like “Me, Myself And I” (#8) and
“You’re a Pain” (#6) make
this a marvelous mixer in a Blues show.
