Winthrop Rhythm & Blues Festival shakes the Methown
Valley
The 2005 Winthrop Rhythm and Blues Festival rocked the
quiet resort town of Winthrop
in the beautiful Methow Valley of North Central Washington
State over the July 15-17 weekend.
Internationally acclaimed acts such as Coco Montoya
and The Mannish Boys were headlining. The festival also
included an impressive array of regional and local acts
such as Portland’s DK Stewart Band, Washington’s
Polly O’Keary, The Rhythm Method and The Randy
Oxford Band along with Lil’ Brian and the Zydeco
Travelers. There was a band for every taste in blues
and R&B. In
it’s 18th year, The Winthrop Blues Festival is
held in the spectacular setting of Washington’s
Okanogan National Forest, in the North Cascades. The
Methow River flows next to the grounds so you can hop
in and cool off with a swim! Dedicated in bringing the
best in blues and R&B in an outdoor festival setting,
the Winthrop Festival achieves just that. With Coco
Montoya headlining on Saturday night and The Mannish
Boys on Sunday night, the festival brought the very
best in legendary performances to its visitors. The
Mannish Boys recorded their performance on Saturday
night and word is, the recording was so good that they’ll
be putting out a Live CD Recording from the Winthrop
R&B Festival soon. The highlight of the festival
was Sunday night’s closing performance by the
Mannish Boys. An all-star blues revue from Los Angeles,
The Mannish Boys were on the Pacific NW leg of their
European summer tour supporting thier #1 blues CD, “That
Represent Man” along with promoting the new DeltaGroove
Productions record label. The Mannish Boys are a traditional
blues revue featuring the great Kid Ramos on lead guitar,
the legendary Johnny Dyer on vocals and blues harp,
Richard “Bigfoot” Innes on drums, Tom Leavey
on bass, the amazing Leon Blue on Piano, bandleader
Finis Tasby on lead vocals and harp ace, vocalist and
DeltaGroove CEO, Randy Chortkoff. With songs such as
Hoochie Coochie Man, The Mannish Boys keep very closely
to original blues traditions of Muddy Waters, Howling
Wolf and Little Walter. Their sound gets the crowd up
dancing and they don’t retake their seats until
the shows over! After the Mannish Boys completed their
set, Polly O’Keary hosted a blue jam in the beer
garden tent which many of the musicians laying over
in Winthrop participated in. |
