Kashmar expresses through lyrics what he “says”
through his harmonica. Both avenues allow him
to deliver convincingly. His latest recording
gives us plenty to consider, as he communicates
freely about the things that we face in our daily
lives. The album’s title track, “Wake
Up and Worry,” tells us that all is not
velvet and honey. There are reasons to stop and
think about it. Kashmar reminds us that life has
it challenges, and we’ve got to face them
everyday. Guitarists Junior Watson, Rusty Zinn,
Alastair Greene, and John Marx give the session
plenty of thrills. The rhythm section of pianist
Fred Kaplan, bassist Rick Reed and drummer Richard
Innes keeps the program going strong from the
opening track to the closer. Like most of the
program’s selections, “Night Creeper”
boogies with a down to earth sentiment that features
Kashmar’s harp and vocals. He’s on
top of his game as he drives each message home
from both barrels.
“Half Pint-aWhiskey” is relaxed, contemporary
and smooth, while “Black Dog Blues”
gets serious from a country blues perspective.
“I’m Sorry” lopes casually with
a seductive organ mood that features guest Bobby
Whatley as lead vocalist, while “You Dogged
Me” pairs Kashmar with guest Randy Chortkoff
in a vocal duet and harmonica blowout. Both veterans
deliver the new loud and clear with no misunderstanding.
It’s all about today, as Kashmar and his
musical partners remind us that the blue language
reaches everyone with equal opportunities all
around us. |
