Taj Mahal has been with us for a long time and, as a great artist, has given us numerous hits.  But, behind every great artist is a great band.  Taj Mahal’s backup band is the Phantom Blues Band.  And just as Motown’s Funk Brothers have received recent recognition for backing up so many Motown artists, the Phantom Blues Band now has their opportunity for recognition with their debut CD, Out Of The Shadows released by Delta Groove Records.  Though there are numerous songs on the release that are outstanding, I’m Looking For a Miracle seems to stand out above the rest.  But that’s only my opinion.  You will also find My Aching Back and Who’s Been Sleeping In y Bed to draw attention.  There are other songs that also have potential.  Check out I Only Have Love.  For remakes, you have some great renditions of The Olympics’ Big Boy Pete, and Chuck Berry’s Havana Moon.  For a classic style, you will find Let Them Talk very pleasing.  It’s the Old School sound, and that’s what we like.  There are a couple of bonus tracks on this one.  Mary Ann is truly a bonus for us.  Also in the bonus section is Baby Doll, another classic style belly rubber.  This band is great.  This CD is great.  And rightfully so!  The Phantom Blues Band received a Grammy with Taj Mahal in 1997 and 2001 for the Best Contemporary Blues Album.  The group also received recognition in 2001 at the Blues Music Awards for being selected Band of the Year.
