Sean Costello "We Can Get Together"

I couldn't wait to hear Sean's newest disc as his passing was such a shock for me and my listeners. He had so much talent and as evident on "We Can Get Together" he was growing not only as a guitarist but what's even more important, as musician. His lyrics were memorable, his arrangements powerful and his vocals better than ever – his take on "Going Home" brought O.V. Wright's image to my mind and that says something.

Sean Costello's new album of course is also an amazing new release, there are a couple of cuts that just stick in my mind and keep playing over and over again...like the song Hard Luck Woman. It is just so sad and such a shame that he lost himself in the shuffle of this hard business. I only got to know Sean's music about 18 months ago when he sent me his previous album, and already he's gone..."

Sean Costello, We Can Get Together (Delta Groove). Mr. Costello first came to the attention of many in the Blues world playing behind Susan Tedeschi on her Just Won’t Burn tour. It was pretty obvious from the buzz that he would not be sitting still in the sideman position. On this CD, he demonstrates how that early promise has been realized in a modern and personal style that blends Blues and all kinds of other influences into a funky soul stew. These are songs that would be pretty comfortable sandwiched between Counting Crows and the Wallflowers, but also on an eclectic Blues show. Highlights include Can’t Let Go (3), Told Me a Lie (4), and Have You No Shame (7). Going Home (8) is a gospel song, but it features some of the hottest guitar licks on the album.

I love the Sean Costello CD and have been playing it on the air since I have received it. It was the one-two punch for me. Great tunes….and…Sean played guitar on one of my most favorite CDs of all time, “Just Won’t Burn”. Sean’s CD will be getting a lot of play here on my show.

"YES! I really, really, REALLY enjoyed both. The Sean Costello one is probably his best, far better than his last release, in my opinion. And I can’t even begin to talk about the Command Performance release. Woo! You really know how to pick `em!!"

We have the Costello disc and we have it on air. Nice piece of work and it'll be played quite a bit on /the Juke/. In fact we've got quite a bit of Delta Groove's stuff in rotation, including several discs of the Phantom Blues Band and one of my favorites of the old Hollywood Fats band. So keep up the good work and thanks for providing us some good material!

I've played through Sean Costello's latest album and based on that one hearing it will be the featured new release on next Tuesday's show. I've always liked Sean Costello but his latest disc is a true standout. I think this is his best. The songs are excellent and his playing reaches a new level. Great stuff. It's an early candidate for album of the year (sand it's only February). Keep up the great work. Delta Groove is my favorite company. Your release are always interesting and in most cases outstanding.

I reviewed a bunch of new cd's this week, & Sean's is one of the best. Esp. track #2. Sounds like vintage Stones.

“’We Can Get Together’ might be the best music Sean Costello has laid down! Great!”

When Sean Costello blasted onto the national scene with his debut release in 1996, he was all of 16 years old and lauded as the next big thing in the blues. Four albums and twelve years later, Costello has matured into a brilliant songwriter, vocalist, guitarist, and producer. Shit, when I saw him on stage back in 2003 he just killed it, the guy is so damn good. Did you catch him when he played Antone’s in 2005? No? Shame on you. In addition to his own recordings, Costello has contributed guitar on studio albums by Susan Tedeschi and R&B legend Nappy Brown. He wrote nearly all of the songs on this fine record, a fantastic eleven song set that features Costello¹s trademark mix of traditional blues, slow soul ballads, and fatback funk. For some of that old-school guitar blues, spin “How in the Devil” (6). Mix
things up with the soulful “Can’t Let Go” (3), or try the haunting slide guitar that resonates throughout “Little Birds” (11). I’ve always been partial to Costello’s slow soul numbers, and he has a real good here: “Have You No Shame” (7).

"Both unfortunately and fortunately, pretty much gone are the days when we dust-off our blues titans and lead them to the stage for yet another round of tried-and-true classics. The music needs and must evolve for it to stay relevant, to both the long-time fan, and the new crop of youngsters who will also search for life meaning in their music. Sean Costello devoured the lessons of the past, and forwards the music full-tilt into today's world view, slicing and dicing his way through guitar and vocal deliveries that are at once fresh and insistent, yet, rooted in the depth of perspective that defines the blues; a perspective that belies his years. This will get top play on my weekly blues radio show!"

I got Sean Costello's new CD in the mail today, and rushed home to listen to it. This is a brilliant record, one of his best. I thought he'd have a hard time topping his last release on Tone-Cool, which is one of my favorites, but I think he just might have done it with this one.
Roger Gatchet (KVRX, Austin 91.7 FM)
From what I've heard so far sounds great to me...Will be putting into rotation here tomorrow night on my "Blues Highway" show. Hope all is well and I will be doing my annual BMA nomination show soon and very happy to all the Delta Groove folks in the running. Keep it coming!
Mike Halmo (Blues Director / WBOR / Brunswick, Maine)
I got the Sean Costello CD. Good stuff, as usual. I was already a fan. There's a lot of young guys who can play, but not many with Costello's sincerity. He has uncommonly good taste. Thanks again for everything.

I got my "radio" copy of Sean's CD on Friday and was excited to be the first on WRFG to share it with my listeners this morning. Just wanted to let you know that I had several very positive phone calls from listeners about the CD (and that was before 7:30 AM!). It is an excellent CD – Sean is so talented - I do think this is going to be his big one, especially with Delta Groove doing their excellent promotions behind him. I was so pleased to see so many of our major players in the Atlanta blues scene on the CD. Great job!

Greetings from Memphis. Thanks for sending the new Costello disc; really good tunes. I featured it this past Saturday, playing six tracks. I think it's his best effort to date. I love the way he is able to mix different styles on the record and his voice sounds terrific. I will work this into a regular rotation on Soul Stew.

Checking out the latest e-mail and saw the promo for the new Sean Costello CD, Atlanta's Own Sean Costello. I am a huge fan of Sean and think that it is his time to really hit it big. I think it is THIS CD.
