ROD PIAZZA & MFBQ "THRILLVILLE"
Source: Blues Rag - Baltimore Blues Society
Date: 08/2007
Writer: Bob Coffey

Fifteen solid cuts are delivered by the Flyers on their Delta Groove debut. The disc opens with Little Walter’s “Hate To See You Go” which morphs into Slim Harpo’s “Shake Your Hips” before coming back to Walter. A Piazza patented “head” jam “Westcoaster” follows with his monstrous chromatic tone over an easy swing.A twin sax section backs the lighthearted “Sugar” while Piazza sings of searching China for something sweet. There’s a muscular reading of the Jr.Wells classic “Hoodoo Man.” The ultra funky “MFBQ” that sounds like a James Brown party tune, complete with modulations, rave-ups and simple exhortative lyrics of uncertain meaning. Guitarist Henry Carvajal contributes the instrumental “Civilian,” with a quirky intro before launching into a flat-tire shuffle showcasing his guitar work. Henry also doubles the vocals with Piazza on Elmore James “Stranger Blues.” Piazza’s appreciation for mid-fifties doo-wop has become a staple of his last few albums and The Turks “It Can’t Be True” is offered up here with three part harmonies. Another likely set ending spectacular harp instrumental is given a full dose of “Snap Crackle Hop.” The Willie Dixon penned “I Don’t Play” is another Little Walter standard offered along with the disc closing “Sad Hours.”You get your moneys worth with this one.
