It has been a several years since we’ve heard anything from Rod Piazza. He is back with us this summer with The Mighty Flyers Blues Quartet with a new release, ThrillVille on the Delta Groove label. There several good cuts on the release, my favorite being Sugar. It is a sweet song with some heavy-duty blues. Others that caught my attention were Get Wise and Stranded. There is also a great instrumental on the release. Maybe you are not much into instrumentals, but you need to check out Westcoaster. After a number of years performing and recording with his idol, George “Harmonica” Smith, California-based bandleader, harmonica player and vocalist, Rod Piazza assembled The Mighty Flyers in the early 80’s. With his wife, Honey, on the keyboards, Henry Carvajal on guitar and Dave Kida on drums, Rod Piazza &The Mighty Flyers Quartet keep churning out the music, their latest, of course, ThrillVille. In 2006, The Flyers were chosen Band of the Year in the Blues Music Awards. It was obvious that they should follow up this achievement with a new release. Listen to this new disc and you will hear music from the most consummate bandleader and performer in the blues arena today.
