SEAN COSTELLO
Source: Suncoast Blues Society
Date: 05/2008

Sean Costello, former boy-wonder guitarist for Susan Tedeschi (and part of the Brat Pack of young blues guitarists from the late 90’s) has in We Can Get Together, a far more mature, but still rockin’, guitar dominated album of mostly original material. Backed by his usual band (Aaron Trubic, bass, and Paul Campenella, drums) with additional keys added for spice (and even a choir on one tune!). Sean borrows his tortured vocal style from fellow Brat Packer Johnny Lang, best used on the title cut, Have

You No Shame, All This Time, and the especially scary How In The Devil (with added distortion to his vocal track, ala early Howling Wolf). The guitar playing is delivered in generous portions all over the album, and is never over the top-usually just right for the song, framing the vocals and setting up for fluid, melodic solos. In fact my only complaint about the guitar is I wish there were some clean phrased solos here and there for variety. But the best part

here are the songs- no traditional 12 bar, yet it’s so clearly blues in sound and feel, and still sounds fresh and new, it’s almost at times like listening to “False Accusations” by Robert Cray, it’s that different and yet familiar. Production chores were handled by Sean himself, and he acquits himself nicely behind the board, with a very nice smooth sound overall.

Overall a great mature effort by one of the best “young guns” out there... unfortunately, as we were going to press, we learned of Sean’s passing... truly a shame to lose someone so talented at such a young age (just shy of 29 years)...
