While there are nearly countless gifted vocalists across all genres of music, there have long been 3 outstanding voices in the blues/blues-rock arena. B.B. King for more years than I can recall has been and continues to be the "Chairman of the Board" of blues singers. In more blues flavored classic rock, there is only one Paul Rogers and in blues-rock it is Malford Milligan who defines greatness. While it normally seems to be the case when reviewing CDs that I am invariably citing some guitarist as having either a Stevie Ray, Hendrix, or Rory Gallagher influence, upon rare occasion I get something by a truly special vocalist whose work will be reminiscent of one of the big three singers above. For example, I recall that I have noted the Paul Rogers like quality within the vocals in the outstanding work of Marcus Malone.
With that said, I bring to your attention a very fine piece of work from the Austin based singer/songwriter/guitarist Mike Zito, whose truly outstanding vocals will certainly remind you of Malford Milligan, both in passion and intensity. "Today", Zito's latest release on the Electro Groove label, is a very credible collection of 13 tracks, 12 of which are extremely well written originals along with a brilliant remake of Prince's "Little Red Corvette". I have to admit that when I first saw a Prince song on this list I was a bit skeptical, but certainly not after listening to Zito's rendition. Zito's original material is well above average and very personal in nature, which should take you back in time somewhat to a day when song writers actually had something to say. Take a listen to the opening track "Love Like This" and see if the lyrics will not warm your heart.
The material here is mostly blues-rock and Texas-rock, combined with a touch of pop, jazz and funk. There are lots of influences present, and I suspect that if you enjoy soulful vocals and well played guitar, you are going to enjoy this set very much. The backing players are most impressive as well, anchored by the highly respected Tony Braunagel on drums. I have several personal favorites on the CD, but again it is hard for me to not pick "Love Like This" as it is such a showcase for Zito's triple talents of ax slinging, gritty and genuine vocals, and meaningful song writing. The smoldering blues tune "Slow It Down" and the Texas rocking "Hollywood" are also among my favorites. And, of course, "Little Red Corvette"….I am certain Malford Milligan would be very proud of Mr. Zito's interpretation.
"Today" is available online from numerous locations, but I encourage you to purchase yours via the official Mike Zito web site at www.mikezito.com . I am giving this recording my no doubt should have been patented "buy it no matter how far your 401K has fallen" recommendation.
