Randy Chortkoff, owner of Delta Groove and Eclecto-Groove Records in CA, has a hot new artist with all the right chops and licks, and man, what a voice! “Today” opens with “Love Like This,” the story of Zito’s shear joy at the birth of his first child. It’s a moving song, complete with a reference to a lyric by John Lennon. The song is very catchy and leaves you anxious to hear more of this guy. Up next he delivers a mellow little number called “Superman,” a song that puts the spotlight on his incredible voice. Among the many highlights on this one, and I do mean several, as “Holding Out For Love,” a sweet song I want to play again and again; “Slow It Down,” where Zito reflects on his life and plays guitar as precisely as any blues veteran; and “Deep Down In Love,” one of the more rocking songs on the album with just a touch of funk thrown in for good measure.
In summation, this is the first time I’ve been as equally impressed with a new artist’s voice as with his or her guitar skills. Zito’s vocals are a little edgy, but his range is vast and ability to convey emotion second-to-none. To me, Mike Zito is one of those rare individuals who can reach my heart and my mind with his music. He’s a world-class artist with a very bright future in blues.
