“Hey, Chel,” Jeff said, dropping his drill into his tool belt holster. “Do you have any good tunes?”

It was a 97-degree June day in Columbus, Ohio. We’d decided to fight the sun and the humidity to finish the privacy fence we started at the end of last summer. We needed something to make the job a little easier. Not just cherry Kool-Aid or the occasional Frito and French Onion dip breaks, but something else that would help to get us into the groove. We needed music!

“No High School Musical,” Jeff said adamantly.

“Relax, it’s Mike Zito.”

“Will I like him?”

I nodded, wiped my hands on a discarded Clay Aiken t-shirt and set the CD to play.
Mike Zito’s newest project, “Today” became our soundtrack as we stained, sawed, drilled, leveled and fenced ourselves in from the one-eared drooling dog that lives behind us as well as the woman next door who does not appreciate that sometimes you really need to play awesome guitar rifts kind of loud and repeatedly.

Zito describes his genre of music as Rock-Pop-Blues on his MySpace page. I describe his style as a collective melodic creation of creativity that threads together hope, courage, positivity, and triumph. It’s fun music, it’s meaningful music, it’s contemporary, but most important to me – IT’S NOT MANUFACTURED. Nothing is overproduced or too tightly tweaked. It's raw and real.

As a singer, guitarist and songwriter, Mike Zito has found the secret to taking his talents and melding them together. “Today” is Zito’s musical stepping stone into the future and at the same time an artistic tool for healing his past.
Mike Zito has not sugar-coated any part of his life, yet at the same time, he does not lecture through his lyrics – he is honest.

“I love these songs. They’re my life, my feelings, my being and my craziness. But most of all they’re my awareness.” - From Mike Zito’s liner notes.

Being aware of the things other people do is easy. But . . . being aware and honest about the things that we do as individuals is scary and sometimes best left ignored. "Today" is a project that knocks down the "fences" of fear of self and addresses contemporary issues through lyrics, melodies and those awesome guitar rifts.
